Often, our first contact with a client is when she comes in pregnant or for a free pregnancy test. If she is pregnant, our Coupon Program is offered.
If she is not pregnant, there are alternative services we can offer her, depending on her needs. If she is single, we may counsel her about the consequences of her sexual activity. We may share God’s plan for sex: chastity, which is saving sex for marriage.
The Coupon Program was a new concept initiated in our first center on February 1st 1993, to continue to meet the material needs of our clients. With the Coupon Program, clients can earn coupons for items needed for themselves and their children. These items may include maternity clothes, a layette (that we are happy to deliver to the hospital), baby quilt, baby furniture (including bassinet, car seats, stroller, playpen, high chair) and other items if they have been donated and are on hand. Other items are available to our clients and on an emergency basis as needed such as diapers, formula, and baby clothes that can be exchanged up to size 4T.
When most crisis pregnancy centers began, their policy was to give to their clients, free of charge, clothing, baby items, cribs and furniture; anything that would help or encourage a woman to give her child life. However, today we are finding a trend away from FREE! FREE! toward attempting to teach the valuable life lesson that with privileges come responsibilities.
At The James Isaac House we feel that even though the items we provide for our clients’ use are donated to us, we have a responsibility to the client in a positive manner. They are not simply getting a hand out, but real help.
Since our clients meet one-on-one with a volunteer, she can choose how she wants to earn her coupons. Her choices are listed on the adjoining page. Normally, she meets with her counselor once a week for an hour. Often, homework is given, and extra credit is awarded when it is completed and returned.
If this is a planned or unplanned pregnancy, she may be advised to begin education in pregnancy and parenting classes that are designed for any situation. She will be counseled on the options that are available to her, including adoption.
